About MCBW

Munich and Bavaria are centers of creativity that exemplify excellent connections between design and the economy. MUNICH CREATIVE BUSINESS WEEK (MCBW), organized by bayern design, takes place in the first quarter of every year and is the largest design event in Germany. To illustrate the region’s design potential, along with more than 120 committed program partners MCBW creates a platform where companies with an affinity for design as well as designers, design agencies across disciplines including architecture and advertising, and design aficionados can follow the claim "Design connects!" More than 70,000 participants can take advantage of the substantial opportunities to transfer knowledge and explore inspiring design experiences offered in two programs: CREATE BUSINESS! for professionals, and DESIGN SCHAU! for all others interested in design.

The focus of the concept and of the content of MCBW is highlighted by alternating themes reflecting current trends in society. The 2020 edition of MCBW will center on "Sustain by Design", due in part to the debates about climate change and the transformation of the use of energy, because good design drives ecologic, economic and social sustainability. Six themed clusters – the future of media, work, cities, fashion, digitization, and innovation – will be presented and discussed.

CREATE BUSINESS – the MCBW dialog and networking platform for professionals

With innovation as its stimulus, design exerts an active, creative, and humane influence on change. With this in mind, MCBW presents big ideas, sustainable trends, and new products at conferences, symposiums, workshops, receptions, and many other events. MCBW fosters business contacts, the transfer of expertise, and lively discussions among corporate and design sector participants and among a variety of creative disciplines.

As a founders’ platform initiated by bayern design for companies and designers with the objective of facilitating successful, efficient careers in design, MCBW START UP strengthens targeted exchange among design-oriented start-ups, young and experienced designers, and business experts.

DESIGN SCHAU! – the MCBW showcase for design lovers

Nine days to experience, sample, and understand design in all its facets directly on site – exhibitions, vernissages and other events and initiatives about design culture originating in Bavaria and the rest of the world take place at more than 150 locations around Munich and Bavaria. DESIGN SCHAU! showcases Munich as a vibrant German center of design.

The MCBW claim "Design connects!" is a unique way to draw attention to the Bavarian way of life and the unique proximity of design to the economy:
Design connects people to people, people to technology, analog to digital.
Design connects practical to emotional, functional to aesthetic.
Design connects the past to the future – designers resolve topical questions, create solutions to business or societal problems, and craft sustainable models for tomorrow.

MCBW Main Topic 2020: Sustain by Design

Fridays for Future, Made by Vielfalt and many more initiatives make it clear: it is time to take action. That doesn’t apply only to climate protection but also to education, integration, transport, housing, etc. Good design drives sustainability: ecologically, economically and socially. In six topic areas, the MCBW presents what design can and will contribute to that:

Individualization // Interactivity // Cultural Integration // Two-tier Internet

The Future of Innovation

Globalization, knowledge, security ... how can we think the big issues in a way that the new will sustain and take effect tomorrow? What does design-driven innovation provide? How long is a start-up a start-up?

Knowledge Culture // Globalization // Health // Security // Design-driven Innovation // Start-up Culture

The Future of Digitization

Is there an Artificial Intelligence Quotient? What happens to love in the digital age? Who does actually design the new social codes?

Artificial Intelligence // Connectivity // Social Cohesion // Ethical Framework // Internet of Things // Accountability of Platforms // Augmented Reality // Virtual Reality

The Future of Cities

Will the smart city unite nature and technology?  Can using instead of owning create new (wiggle) rooms?  How can mobility be designed vertically?

Mobility // Urbanization // Housing // Nutrition // Driving Bans // Urban Planning // Rural Exodus // MuseumsQuartier

The Future of Fashion

Can I earn karma points with my jeans? Is a clean conscience stylish? How much of tomorrow’s out is in today’s outfit?
